Striking Oil in Alberta

Small, free-standing retail stores are probably not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Butler building systems. But, Lewis Semashkewich of Melewka Structures & Design in Athabasca, Alberta thought the combination of the flexibility and quality of Butler systems, along with a design/build approach, would win the day for Great Canadian Oil Change/Valvoline. Two years ago, Lewis approached Great Canadian with an offer to adapt their wood-frame prototype to Butler systems. The result was a 1640 square foot structure with an MR-24 roof using the TLS insulation system. The roof had parapets and an internal gutter system. The walls were insulated metal panels (IMP).

“Because I self-perform, Melewka was able to provide the owners with a turn-key solution that actually cut their schedule by more than 60%, and was under budget”, Lewis noted. Melewka was able to win their first job in Medicine Hat, Alberta, and are positioned well to win future work.  Great Canadian was delighted with the results and felt Medicine Hat was one of the most attractive stores in their network.

Semashkewich said the Butler systems also provide added value beyond the first cost. The Butler system can meet or exceed the requirements of the Canadian Energy Code. And, with the flexibility of pre-engineered systems, Great Canadian can meet the needs of any size market by adding service bays or a car wash to the structure.
