Project Details

San Antonio, Texas
20,000 square feet

Structural System: Butler Heavy Structures
Roof System: Other

End Use: Athletic and Entertainment

This fan-shaped amphitheater located at Retama Park outside of San Antonio provides covered seating for 8,000 concert-goers with lawn seating for an additional 12,000 patrons. The structure, which was designed and fabricated by Butler Heavy Structures, rises 67' above grade at the stage. The primary structural system consists of 12'-deep parallel-chord trusses that span from 120' across the narrow part of the fan to 240' in the center.

The trusses were factory assembled from hot-rolled shapes and are supported on 5' diameter concrete columns. In the stage area, a structural steel grid system was supplied to support lighting, scenery, and sound systems. Butler Heavy Structures used hot-rolled sections laid out on 8' centers to support the collateral load.

Conventional bar joists, spanning from 40' to 60', were used for the roof secondary system with each joist designed to support a 2000 lbs. load at any panel point. A custom fascia system was used around the perimeter of the structure to create a flat-roof appearance, requiring a stainless steel interior gutter system to handle run-off. Pre-engineered products used on the project include a modified metal roof system with an acoustical deck for sound enhancement and metal wall panels on the fascia.
