A new facility delivers a bright, modern workspace built around people. Butler systems strengthen comfort, clarity and long-term performance, turning a simple vision into an assured, high-quality environment.

Project
Overview

SafeStart has shaped global conversations around workplace safety for decades. From its headquarters in Belleville, Ontario, the company trains organizations to recognize and reduce the human factors behind most incidents. As the business expanded, SafeStart recognized its own facility was no longer aligned with the standards it teaches. A new environment was essential to support its people and sustain its mission.

In 2014, the leadership team committed to creating a workspace that improved clarity, reduced fatigue and reinforced the company’s culture of safety. The goal was direct: build a facility that reflects the principles SafeStart delivers to its customers every day.

“Our goal was, if we’re going to go to work here, how do we create a space that we want to be in every day for eight hours? What should that feel like? So, we decided to focus on building a space that reflected what we sell,” said Barb Tait of SafeStart.

SafeStart identified four states that influence performance and well-being — rushing, frustration, fatigue and complacency — and set out to design a building that minimized each one. Achieving that level of alignment required a partner with the ability to translate intent into engineered solutions.

SafeStart selected Bel-Con Design-Builders Ltd., a Butler Builder®, to lead the project. Bel-Con approached the assignment with the discipline and clarity that define systems construction, ensuring SafeStart had full visibility into every decision and outcome.

“We used modeling to generate exterior and interior renderings, so they could see what their building would look like. It helped them with the visual process of going from concept to working drawings,” said Tom Gunsinger of Bel-Con Design-Builders Ltd.

This approach reduced uncertainty, established shared expectations and confirmed the design aligned with SafeStart’s goals for functionality, comfort and long-term adaptability.

Access to natural light was a priority from the start. Bel-Con integrated the SunLite Strip® daylighting system to distribute consistent, energy-efficient daylight throughout the 28,000-square-foot facility. Multiple entry points around the building ensure every employee is within 30 feet of an exterior door, increasing access to fresh air and outdoor space.

This solution supports SafeStart’s focus on reducing fatigue and improving overall well-being— an engineered environment aligned with the organization’s mission.

The project also included a new warehouse built for safer, more efficient material handling. With clear movement paths and improved ergonomics, employees can process shipments and manage high-demand requests without unnecessary strain.

Butler seems to create buildings from the inside out, considering people and their states of mind. This mindset completely aligns with what we try to do with our clients.

The outcome is a workspace that reinforces SafeStart’s commitment to practical safety and operational clarity.

Bel-Con’s disciplined design process and use of Butler systems created a modern, resilient building ready for future expansion. The structure integrates Butler wall systems for performance and long-term adaptability, paired with daylighting systems that support employee well-being.

“By integrating Butler wall systems for exterior appeal and future expandability, along with daylighting, we built a bright, modern and attractive new office that SafeStart can leverage to recruit and accommodate top talent,” said Gunsinger.

SafeStart began with a simple list of needs — light, space, efficiency and room to grow. The final facility delivers all of it with engineered precision.

Two and a half years after the initial conversation, SafeStart now operates from a facility that strengthens its mission and supports its global reach. Through disciplined planning and systemized construction, Bel-Con transformed an open field into a high-performance workplace that reflects SafeStart’s values and prepares the company for its next chapter.
