Bingemans Kingpin Bowlounge
A modern, high-capacity facility engineered using Butler® systems, including primary framing, coordinated roof integration and disciplined winter construction enabled a seven-month delivery and a cohesive connection to an existing complex.
Project
Overview
Bingemans, a longstanding destination for entertainment, sought a facility capable of delivering a modern, high-capacity bowling experience while integrating seamlessly with the existing structures built with Butler systems.
The goal was clear: create a contemporary environment with reliable performance, efficient construction and a cohesive connection to the larger entertainment district.
“It’s not your grandfather’s bowling alley,” said developer Mark Bingeman.
The facility required precise structural coordination with ABA Architects Inc. to meet lane height, clearance and sightline requirements. From concept to completion, the project was delivered in seven months — meeting critical business objectives tied to summertime hospitality traffic.
Bingemans partnered with Melloul-Blamey Construction Inc., a Butler Builder® based in nearby Waterloo, selected for its experience with the campus and its proven ability to manage technical complexity under tight timelines.
The clearspan structural system delivered the open concept Bingemans required, providing high ceilings, long spans and controlled column placement. Slender columns positioned every 25 feet maintained sightlines without compromising interior flow.
“Often, a bowling alley can conjure an image of a dark, dingy space with low ceilings. Instead, we envisioned a modern, comfortable environment with plenty of natural light. Partnering with Melloul-Blamey and an architect helped us accomplish that goal,” Bingeman said.
Because Kingpin Bowlounge connects directly to FunworX, the project required careful alignment between new and existing Butler structures. The addition was rotated 30 degrees from the original footprint, creating a complex roof interface. Melloul-Blamey used a flat roof membrane to join the new structure with the existing MR-24® roof systems. Curbs and deckings were incorporated to maintain proper drainage and performance.
Winter conditions introduced further constraints. To maintain the schedule, Melloul-Blamey recommended thawing the ground and installing an underground hydronic heating system during excavation. This allowed floor slabs to be poured in March, ensuring sufficient curing time for lane installation in April.
To provide architectural continuity, Melloul-Blamey specified the TextureWall™ wall system for the front elevation. Masonry and curtainwall elements complemented the systemized envelope to unify the expansion with the existing FunworX structure.
Kingpin Bowlounge has injected excitement into the Waterloo entertainment scene. The community response has been great, and it’s truly becoming an entertainment destination.
The facility includes bowling lanes, restaurant integration, mezzanine event space and outdoor gathering areas. The layout supports large groups, corporate events and tournaments while providing clear wayfinding between Kingpin Bowlounge, FunworX and the outdoor entertainment district.
“Kingpin Bowlounge has injected excitement into the Waterloo entertainment scene. The community response has been great, and it’s truly becoming an entertainment destination,” said Jeff Shantz from builder Melloul-Blamey.
Kingpin Bowlounge now serves as a modern anchor for the Bingemans campus, supported by Butler systems engineered for longevity, constructability and design flexibility.
