Kansas State University Bilbrey Family Event Center

A state-of-the-art agricultural event center expands student learning and supports regional competitions and community engagement with engineered climate control, clearspan function and integrated structural and lighting systems for year-round performance.

Project
Overview

Kansas State University’s Bilbrey Family Event Center embodies purposeful engineering and strategic design to advance agricultural education, community engagement and competitive livestock and rodeo activities.

Situated north of the Manhattan campus, the 76,500-square-foot facility expands K-State’s hands-on teaching capacity while providing a climate-controlled arena that supports teaching, youth outreach and industry events.

The center’s construction by Continental Divide Builders, LLC, a Butler Builder®, is the first project completed as part of the university’s Agriculture Innovation Initiative, signaling a new era of experiential learning and service to agricultural communities.

The heart of the center is the 130-by-250-foot arena, where engineering meets performance. Designed to host up to 40 events annually, the arena reinforces K-State’s commitment to preparing students for careers in the livestock industry.

The venue’s clearspan interior delivers unobstructed lines of sight for competitors and spectators, while bleacher seating for 3,000 people accommodates large crowds with ease.

Teresa Douthit, interim head of the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry, underscored the facility’s instructional impact by saying, “The Bilbrey Family Event Center will facilitate live animal demonstrations and observations and allow learners to practice skills through clinics and hands-on activities that can’t be accomplished in a lecture hall.”

This reflects a core principle in the facility’s design: Align structural capability with academic mission.

The building’s performance envelope combines durability and environmental control. The MR-24® Roof System delivers a long-lasting, weather-tight cover engineered to protect the facility in all seasons, while Shadowall wall panels provide consistent interior lighting and thermal efficiency that support year-round activity without reliance on artificial lighting.

These product choices reflect intentional system selection that enhances the investment’s long-term value.

Beyond the main arena, the center integrates essential support spaces that enable efficient competition and livestock handling. Stock pens complete with bucking chutes and roping boxes, a covered wash area for horses and cattle with 10 small livestock wash pens and a staged enclosed 80-by-80-foot prep zone ensure that participants and animals move through the facility safely and logically.

A manager’s office, meeting room, restrooms with showers, and a security and first aid room support staff operations, while an open lobby with concessions and beverage sales enhances the guest experience.

A second-floor VIP lounge with expansive windows overlooking the arena and staging area extends the viewing experience for guests. Amenity-rich spaces like this reinforce the center’s dual purpose: a functional hub for livestock science and a welcoming destination for community and industry partners.

Student athletes and faculty alike have celebrated the project. Madeline Meyer, president of the K-State Rodeo team, called the competition space “absolutely amazing,” noting that year-round practice in a climate-controlled environment elevates performance and recruitment.

The Bilbrey Family Event Center stands as a testament to purposeful design and cohesion between built systems and educational mission. It delivers an environment where future agricultural professionals can train, compete and collaborate with confidence and precision.

Kassandra Shoemaker, a graduate assistant rodeo coach, said the new space provides both convenience and confidence for student athletes. “Having a state-of-the-art center like this just allows us to practice in a good facility all year round,” Shoemaker said. “It helps us better prepare for competition.”
