Overview

Spanning 1.3 million square feet across two sites, the U.S. Army undertook one of the largest training complex expansions in its history at Fort Benning, Ga.

 

The project required the delivery of 34 facilities designed to support modern military training, housing and operations. The scope included 20 two-story barracks, four Battalion Headquarters buildings, two Dining Halls, one Brigade Headquarters building and multiple support structures, all executed within a fast-paced design-build schedule.

 

As part of a partnership across multiple builders and vendors, Rainwater Construction Co., a Butler Builder®, worked with other companies to erect Butler building systems as shells for this massive project.

From the earliest stages of design, Butler teams worked alongside the architect and construction manager to establish optimal structural layouts, align sequencing strategies and finalize a construction schedule that remained disciplined to budget and delivery expectations.

The complexity of the Training Complex extended beyond scale. Construction activities were split between two distinct locations on the Fort Benning base, requiring precise coordination of labor, materials and oversight.

Teams approached the effort as two parallel projects, assigning dedicated crews and supervision to each site while coordinating material deliveries and logistics across both. This approach ensured consistent quality control and eliminated schedule disruption despite the volume of concurrent work.

Execution strategy was equally deliberate. The most complex buildings were prioritized early in the process, allowing lessons to be applied systematically as work progressed.

Several buildings were completed months ahead of schedule, enabling phased delivery and controlled commissioning. Crews were organized by building type and function, and each superintendent was responsible for a defined group of structures. This specialization created continuity, accelerated issue resolution and reinforced consistency across the entire campus.

Sustainability performance was embedded into the design intent from the start. All primary facilities were designed to achieve LEED Silver certification, supported by precision-engineered MR-24® Roof Systems that mitigated heat island impact and material selections aligned with long-term durability and energy performance.

These measures reinforced the Army’s commitment to resilient infrastructure while maintaining the operational rigor required of an active military installation.

Despite the accelerated pace and distributed sites, the Training Complex was delivered on time and on budget.

Early collaboration, systemized construction and experienced field leadership allowed teams to meet schedule demands without compromising quality or safety. The result is a cohesive campus that supports readiness, training and daily life for service members stationed at Fort Benning.
