NCCM Company
A budding company turns to a Butler Builder® for a bright, unified production and office space with plenty of opportunity for growth.
Project
Overview
As demand for NCCM Company’s specialized mill-roll products grew, Brent and Julie Niccum required a facility that reflected their commitment to quality and innovation. They turned to Butler Manufacturing® and Derrick Building Solutions, a longtime Butler Builder®, to deliver a structure engineered for performance, efficiency and future expansion.
The new River Falls, Wis., headquarters features Butler’s structural system, creating open production areas with unobstructed workflow and natural light. Butler engineering ensured seamless integration between the two-story office and manufacturing spaces, maintaining structural integrity and aesthetic alignment.
High-mounted windows and reflective interior finishes optimize daylighting, reducing energy use while creating a bright, efficient workspace. Precision-engineered steel systems were custom-finished in NCCM’s corporate colors, reinforcing the company’s brand identity through lasting materials and proven durability.
“We’re extremely happy with how the building reflects our business,” said founder Brent Niccum. “It performs as well as it looks.”
During its first few years of operation, NCCM experienced success and a growing product demand, which eventually spurred demand by late 2013 for a new, larger production facility.
NCCM assessed its previous facility and identified opportunities for improvement, including functional and environmental changes. With a new building, the company wanted to centralize production at the facility, create an environment that emphasizes quality control and unify production with administrative offices while infusing natural light into the facility.
Additionally, NCCM sought a facility that could accommodate expansion within five to 10 years. As the process for a new building started, the Niccums toured industrial parks in River Falls and noticed a trend: many of the buildings were Butler buildings.
Chad and Bill Derrick, project manager and president, respectively, of Derrick Building Solutions, met with the Niccums to showcase a portfolio of Butler buildings in the area. The sides aligned on many things, and the project moved forward.
As planning began for the new NCCM facility, Julie and Brent Niccum had a clear vision for the look of the building. Natural light was a priority, and they wanted the building design to tie into the wooded area surrounding the industrial park. DJ Medin Architects collaborated with NCCM and Derrick to ensure the design incorporated the proper vision and building function.
As planning began for the new NCCM facility, Julie and Brent Niccum had a clear vision for the look of the building. Natural light was a priority, and they wanted the building design to tie into the wooded area surrounding the industrial park.
“We knew a Butler building would work, but we needed to fit the cultural feel we were aiming to achieve,” said Julie Niccum.
The final design called for a vaulted foyer with glass walls in the conference rooms and office space, so exterior light flowed freely into the building. NCCM also expressed an interest in having a corporate brand identity represented in the facility. So, Butler custom-painted exposed steel beams to match the colors of NCCM.
“Even when the build process presented challenges, Derrick was so capable and experienced that we were able to move through issues quickly and smoothly,” said Brent Niccum.
To unify the architectural aspects of the two-story office space with the production area, Derrick relied on the Butler engineering team to ensure the integrity of the structural design.
Upon completion of the building in June 2014, NCCM moved into its beautiful new facility. NCCM immediately noticed the amount of daylight flooding into the building, and the company has hardly needed to turn the lights on during the summer months.
What NCCM liked about Butler is that you can make your building into whatever you want. You can combine conventional construction with architectural ambition, and that’s what we did on this project with the help of Butler’s engineering team.
